What To Do When You Don’t Know What To Do: Making Decisions

I don’t know about you but making decisions was not an area I felt strong in. Disclaimer, I’m still a work in progress so today I wanted to share my experience and thoughts around making decisions and what to do when you don’t know what to do.

In a time where so many are having to face decisions about work, home, study, life it can be overwhelming at best of times let alone in a pandemic. Here are a few things to consider when faced with the need to make a decision about your career, dream, or life in 2020.

I used to debate back and forth so much that I would end up with what experts call decision fatigue. I went through many periods where I lacked confidence in myself and made personal decisions used to stress me out. There are many reasons that led to such stress but today I want to debunk the idea that you have to have life figured out by a certain junction of life and you need to make the right decision all the time, every time. It’s way too much pressure and the reality is sometimes we won’t make the best decisions, but we can learn from them. *

*This is not a white flag to say go make bad decisions, but rather to debunk the myth of perfection that we can put on ourselves through cultural and social pressures telling us we can’t get it wrong. This is not true, in building my business I failed many times. Even if you are not a business owner, I recommend reading “Failing Forward” by John C Maxwell. *

Have you ever tried to avoid making a decision and hoping it will go away? Sitting on the fence with life decisions about work, career, home is fine if you need time out to reflect and sit for a moment to assess where you are, what you want, and where you are going, but it’s important to note that no decision is, in fact, a decision.

It is always worth thinking of the bigger picture when it comes to making life decisions. Where do you want to go, who do you want to be? Those things can always change and will likely grow as time goes on, but it’s worth thinking through your decisions today as they lead you to your tomorrow. What do I mean by that? I mean, don’t overlook the small decisions we make everyday like what we snack on, how we choose to spend our spare money after the bills and debts are paid, how we choose to spend our free time watching Netflix or Amazon Prime. Time is accumulated so if it’s good to think about what you are looking to accumulate in life.

The final point to end today is that nobody starts out an expert. Something I learned from my good friend Grace Lewis over at Piece By Peace CBT. Have a go, and don’t be afraid to try something whether it be a job or a healthy snack, or start a new Instagram for a hobby of yours.

In this week’s podcast, I expand on this very topic and share some updates and decisions I’ve made behind the scenes of my company, Frame Your World. Listen to Apple or Spotify, or wherever you stream your podcast from.
